Brooks Residence – Grand Junction, Colorado

The client’s interest in Balinese architecture guided the design for this 5,400 SF residence. Balinese tri-angga classification is characterized by multiples of three and associates upper, middle, and lower with concepts of sacred, mundane, and profane.

Living spaces are arranged into three tiers that step with the slope of the site. Lower tier spaces contain utility functions, middle tier spaces contain functions shared by the homeowners and guests, and upper tier spaces contain private functions exclusively for the homeowners.

Subtle decoration of exterior stone column bases, wood columns and wood patio soffits suggest animal features associated with creatures of the ground and air.

Portions of the building cradle exterior rooms. Interior views of the Colorado National Monument are framed between flanking rock shoulders.
